Other Mental Health Issues
Mental health is an enormous topic touching all areas of life. Other issues in which we specialize include:
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that typically occurs during the fall and winter months when there is less sunlight. Symptoms may include low mood, lethargy, and changes in appetite and sleep patterns.
Childhood trauma refers to experiences of acute or chronic stressors occurring during our formative years. These experiences are not limited to abuse or neglect, and can include experiences like: being the child of divorce, witnessing alcoholism in a parent, having a parent with a personality disorder (i.e. borderline or narcissistic ), or otherwise experiencing emotional abuse. Trauma during childhood, adolescence and beyond often manifests in adulthood in the form of defenses and other personality traits that cause patterns of distress and/or conflict.
Bipolar Disorder is characterized by extreme mood swings, specifically mania and depression. During manic episodes, individuals may feel euphoric or irritable, engage in risky behavior, and have little need for sleep. Conversely, during depressive episodes, individuals may feel hopeless, have low energy, and experience changes in appetite and sleep patterns.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and avoidance of triggers related to the trauma.
Substance abuse refers to the use of drugs or alcohol in a way that negatively impacts a person's life, relationships, and general well-being. This can include physical dependence on a substance, as well as social, emotional, and financial consequences. Substance abuse is often equated with addiction; however, it can also occur in the form of an “unhealthy relationship to substances” whereby costs of substance use may eventually outweigh its benefits.
Feeling lost or “stuck” is common phrase in therapy, referring to a feeling of stagnation in life and/or an inability to define or achieve that which makes life worth living.
